What is the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on disabled people in Sheffield?

A local Scrutiny Committee asked us and Disability Sheffield to share what we know about the impact of Covid-19 on local people who have a disability. This is what we told them - based on what you've told us.

The Healthier Communities and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee is made up of local councillors and representatives, who discuss areas like public health, NHS services, and Adult Social Care. You can find out more about them here.

For their meeting in March 2021, they asked us and Disability Sheffield to share what we know about the specific impact of Covid-19 on disabled people. We know that the pandemic has not affected people equally, and people with a disability have been impacted disproportionately.

We hope that this will encourage a wider conversation about support for disabled people and greater equity moving forward.

What are the key issues?

We reported a huge range of experiences, which broadly fell into the following themes:

  • Health inequalities
  • Impact of Covid-19 restrictions
  • Barriers to accessing services
  • Changes to services and arranging support
  • Access to vaccincations
  • Impact of changes to the physical environment
  • Disabled people having a voice

We also made several recommendations to decision makers, to improve the experiences of disabled people in Sheffield.
