Annual GP patient survey: results published
The GP patient survey is an annual questionnaire that is sent out to a number of patients at every GP practice in England. It asks people about the last time they contacted their GP practice, as well as how they feel about the practice overall.
This year's results were published in July. Just under 700,000 people in England answered the survey - 18,714 of these were people in South Yorkshire.
Key findings
Just over three quarters (76%) of people in South Yorkshire said their overall experience of their GP practice was good. This is slightly higher than the average across England (74%).
People in South Yorkshire and across England feel generally positive about the healthcare professionals they see, and the appointments they receive. Over 90% said they had trust and confidence in the healthcare professional, were as involved as they wanted to be in decisions about their care and treatment, and said their needs were met in their last appointment.
However, there were some more worrying trends across the country and in our region:
- 38% of people in England said it was difficult to contact their GP practice by phone (this rises to 42% in South Yorkshire)
- 37% said it was difficult to contact their GP practice using their website (this rises to 41% in South Yorkshire)
- 39% said it was difficult to contact their GP practice using the NHS app (this was the same in South Yorkshire)
- 41% of people in England were not offered a choice of time, date, or location for their last appointment (this was slightly lower in South Yorkshire: 37%)
- 33% of people in England waited more than one week for their appointment, from the time they contacted their GP practice (this was the same in South Yorkshire)
