Update: GP hubs decisions shaped by your feedback
What was the consultation?
Last year, Sheffield was given £37m to improve primary care buildings in the city.
Most of this money could be used to build new health centres, bringing together GP and other services all under one roof. Four sites were proposed, with nine GP practices potentially moving into them. Their existing buildings would close, and patients would visit the new centres instead. This could be a big change for patients, so the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) ran a consultation to hear from patients and communities about these plans.
The consultation ran between August and October 2022, with public meetings and a widespread survey for people to share their views. You can read more about the plans in our news article from last August.
The consultation gathered views from over 5,000 people. We supported the consultation to help more people to have their say on these potentially big changes - including getting out and about in Burngreave, where fewer people had responded to the survey.
The feedback from the consultation was used to shape the next stages of the decision, and practices could decide whether or not to continue with the process.
What decisions were made?
Three of the proposed sites will go ahead:
- In S3: Burngreave Surgery and Sheffield Medical Centre will relocate to a new health centre on Spital Street, next to Sheffield Medical Centre.
- In S4: Page Hall Medical Centre and Upwell Street Surgery will relocate to a new health centre on Rushby Street.
- In S5: The Health Care Surgery, Buchanan Road Surgery, and Margetson Surgery will relocate to a new health centre on Buchanan Road/Wordsworth Avenue.
One of the proposed sites will not:
Patient and public feedback to the fourth potential site - at Concord Sports Centre - was less positive, and prompted Firth Park Surgery and Shiregreen Medical Centre to withdraw from the plan. This new centre will not be built.
What next?
Construction on the three new sites is due to start at the end of 2023. GPs and new patients could start using the new buildings from late 2024.
