Care or Crisis? A study of people’s experiences of care before and after a mental health crisis

After access to primary care, mental health is the most commonly mentioned issue we receive so Healthwatch Sheffield decided to carry out some independent research.

We gathered views from 118 services users, 302 mental health professionals and 14 GPs.

Our recommendations for improvement include:

  • improving access to support during a crisis
  • developing specific training for GPs
  • bringing waiting times for children and young people having a mental health crisis in line with those for adults
  • consulting further with specific groups about their needs, namely children and young people and those from a BME background
  • better signposting for information to support wellbeing and prevent a mental health crisis.

The full report includes the detailed findings as well as the full response from the service providers including detailed response to each recommendation and who has responsibility for seeing this through.
